Beer Dude: Heavy Seas – The Great’er Pumpkin vs. The Great Pumpkin

Beer Dude: Heavy Seas – The Great’er Pumpkin vs. The Great Pumpkin

I am a huge Heavy Seas fan, they understand subtle hops much in the same way Terrapin does, but different hops, more restraint. Their great pumpkin is one of my favorites. The beer was fantastic in the unaged form was great. Like I mentioned before, I feel like unnecessary bourbon aging is worthless. It is a way to feel like you are making the beer feel more expensive and complex when you don’t know what you are doing. Like real whiskey, there are times it is good and times is worthless. Bourbon can add complexity to a subtle brown or imperial beer. The Great Pumpkin is a great Pumpkin beer, the spices are balanced. The pumpkin flavor is strong. The high alcohol is hidden under a layer of spices, flavor and a complex everything. It is one of the best Pumpkin beers by far. However, the bourbon aging messes up the beer. There is a strong heavy vanilla flavor, there is an unnecessarily astringent after-taste, and an acrid over complexity. When you were younger and learning to cook or whatever; maybe making mother’s day breakfast and you add all the spice you could; what do you learn? It all tastes grey. Rather than the colorful rainbow of taste that should be there, it all fades to nothingness and washes out; this is the tragedy of this beer. Something so good washed away. Try the Great Pumpkin, but go no further.

Enjoy
Nick.
