There are few complicated words you can say about such a movie, but let’s back up for a moment. I have two master’s degrees and there is incredible frustration. The whole industry of Graduate school, you would imagine is designed to encourage academia. However, without getting to political, there is not enough governmental support to make that so. The Graduate School industry is based on getting grants, contracts, and funding from megacorporations. No where is this better satirized than in the PhD Comics. The subtle frustrations of dealing with everything from administration to the seemingly endless helplessness of wanting to make an impact and do the work, but not getting anywhere is shown perfectly. This was then made into a film.

I know what you are thinking, Web Comic? Movie? Poppycock! Well prepare to hold on to your monocles. This movie is laugh out loud funny and enjoyable, but you have to understand what you are getting into. The acting is strained, the characters are occasionally stereotypes or cliches, and the camera tricks are very basic. However, that is the charm of the movie. The movie feels like students are making it and they are unsure too. The whole student vibe of the movie makes it endearing; it is a joy to behold. Watch it!

Enjoy,
