I understand that those who do not understand beer may be intimidated bringing beer to a beer person’s house, especially a beer reviewing asshole like me. However, rather than going ironic with malt liquor or bringing local stuff he may not like; a buddy brought the classy favorite, Stella Artois. Stella was one of the first beers I tasted. My father went to the University of Leuven, the city where Stella comes from. Other than a few fantastic stories he has told me, I remember Stella being in the house for as far back as I can think. Perhaps it was my father’s demeanor or the Fellinian ads, but Stella always seemed like a dignified beer. First off, I have always had the Stella in bottles, but if they have cans where you are, try them. The beer is crisp and heady. The taste is dry and refreshing. I read reviews about it being flat or meh, but understand the distance and the freshness (hence cans being preferable). However, the style of a delicate pilsner or premium lager barely exists in the US and most reviewers expect a Trappist Belgian when they should think Budweiser. Stella is Belgium’s 800 year old version of Budweiser, alcoholic piss water. Love it and try it.
