As mentioned in my loving Alton Brown article, the era of spicy chocolate is upon us. For years, Mexican lagers have had peppers. So now, wait for it, there are beers that are spicy and chocolate. However, my overwhelming sarcasm aside, this new Terrapin and Schmaltz Reunion 2011 is by no means uncreative. From the chocolaty flavors to the spicy notes, every aspect of this beer has been loving planned and perfected. My buddy made a pepper beer that was all spice, to the point that it was blinding. On the other hand, I made a pepper and lemon beer that was too mild and the spice was too fleeting. In their patience, Terrapin and Schmaltz have made the spice lasting and noticeable; distinct, yet subtle. The chocolate neither overwhelms or hides the flavors either. This beer is a wonderful collaboration that is more unique than anything else.
